Both of Trinity’s Junior and Senior girls' basketball teams took to the court today, each playing their first game of the season, looking for a win against visiting side Notre Dame.
Following their heartbreaking loss in the Halton Finals last season, the Senior girls are aiming for nothing less than gold, and it starts with today’s matchup. Coaches Mr. Pugliese and Mr. Bonfiglio's team started strong off the bat. A steal by Jillian Condron coming from the opening jump ball gave HT an early 2 point lead, signalling what was to come. Even play from both sides resulted in a 15-11 score at halftime, but Trinity ramped up the intensity during an emotional 3rd quarter, scoring 5 more points. Notre Dame was not far behind though, with the Titan girls barely leading 20-18 at the end of the third.
Notre Dame quickly tied the game at the beginning of the fourth, but then super-senior student Tiffany McNeil took the game into her own hands, scoring an incredible 8 points in the final frame. McNeil’s clutch performance was bolstered by an overall offensive explosion by HT in the final 2 minutes of the game, sealing the deal to give the Senior girls the 34-25 win.
Star of the game: “It was rough”, was all Tiffany McNeil had to say following the win, possibly referring to the 12 fouls called against Holy Trinity, but a total of 14 points. Using great speed and amazing work ethic on both offense and defense made her stand out during Trinity’s opening matchup. A mention also has to be made to Tayania Smith for contributing 8 points towards HT’s first win of the season.
The Junior girls, coached by Ms. Mowat, then took to the court, looking to follow in the senior’s footsteps. Notre Dame quickly took over the game, dishing out a 15-4 lead, even against a huge push from Holy Trinity, who had various chances but couldn’t convert early. However, Breanna Chambers and Megan Dorrich each put up 2 points before the end of the 1st half. This gave Trinity life, who trailed 15-8 at halftime. Notre Dame kept on the pressure, but the Titan girls kept with them. A smart move by Coach Mowat to make a five-player substitution halfway through the 3rd quarter resulted in a spark, driving the Titan girls to bring the score to 19-14 before the fourth quarter.
Chambers and Nicole Rivait then combined for 7 points during the final quarter, making it a one point game. Unfortunately, that was as close as the Junior girls came, as Notre Dame regained a 5 point lead during the final 4 minutes, with a final score of 21-27 for the Irish.
Star of the Game: Brianne Chambers was a bright spot for the Juniors, scoring 10 points on the night despite the loss. She was all over the court, creating chances every time she had the ball, with impressive speed and skill displayed throughout the game.
Both teams now look ahead to their next matchup against Bishop Reding in Milton on October 6th. Stay tuned for scores, stats and details from that game!
GOOOO TITANS!
