Taylor Swift’s electric concert on Saturday, October 3rd had everyone in a perpetual shock. She delivered her numerous hits Taylor-style - with great sass and power. And let's not forget her emotional songs that left the audience with their hearts in their throats.
Shawn Mendes was her first opening act, a Toronto native, who created a beautiful atmosphere as he asked the crowd to put their lights on and sing. Performing “Life if the Party” as his opening song, he began to deliver his melodic tunes. He even performed a cover of Ed Sheeran’s smash hit “Thinking Out Loud” and ended his wonderful set with his emotional “Never Be Alone”.
Vance Joy, an up and coming star, was the second opening act. He began with “From Afar”, which left the audience in pure bliss at the sound of his voice. During his set the crowd didn’t give him much love in my opinion, other than the fact that numerous fans were belching out all of his lyrics. As soon as his closing song “Riptide” played, the audience had risen to their feet and began dancing immediately and singing the loudest they could - a truly magical moment.
As Vance’s set came to an end, everyone was hyped up for Taylor - people from the ages of 5 to 40 were talking about how excited they were to hear their favourite song. The lights shut off and Taylor welcomed the crowd with her song “Welcome to New York”. She enticed the audience immediately by singing her heart out on a Broadway themed stage, which was absolutely wonderful. She then went on to play “New Romantics”, her biggest hit - “Blank Space”, and she even gave a little homage to the Toronto Blue Jays!
At one point she silenced the crowd as she gave a tearful speech about how fitting in doesn’t matter and to stay true to yourself - to just love yourself. Moments after her perfectly timed speech she played her graceful song “Clean”. As I looked around the stadium there were men, women, kids and teenagers getting teary eyed, and I am guilty of this myself. Taylor evoked a feeling from each and every individual in the stadium, an ability she has had since her pre-headliner days.
Taylor surprised Toronto with special guest star Charli XCX and sang a duet of the movie soundtrack hit “Boom Clap”. Everyone, especially me, belted out the lyrics until we could no longer scream. She ended the night with the burst of fun that is “Shake It Off”, and everyone danced and laughed and screamed as Taylor truly brought the entire crowd together. Taylor created a world where anything is possible. A world where dreams come true and where she feels like your best friend - and I am beyond happy to have lived in it, even if only for a little while.
