Autumn is the ideal time to catch up on some reading-and there’s no better reading spot than in your bedroom, under a mountain of blankets and pillows, with the rain hammering on your windowpane. Here’s a short list of books that are perfect to read wearing a fuzzy sweater and drinking a warm cup of tea.
Norwegian Wood by Haruki Murakami
“If you only read the books that everyone is reading, you can only think what everyone else is thinking.”
I’ve recently finished this novel and I have to confess that it’s my favourite book. Not only is it very atmospheric, it also describes relationships on a much deeper level and guides the readers through a person’s self-discovery. Every line is both powerful and moving.
Breakfast of Champions by Kurt Vonnegut
“We are healthy only to the extent that our ideas are humane.”
This book is hilarious and bizarre. There are many ideas that the author throws at you while you’re reading-which might become overwhelming-but if you’re looking for a great book with really great commentary on social issues (and life in general), then “Breakfast of Champions” might just be the perfect fit.
The Game Of Love And Death by Martha Brockenbrough
“We do not choose whom we love…we can only choose how well.”
This book is complex, vivid, and gorgeous. The beauty of the words and story nearly brought me to tears a couple times. The author weaves together an amazing tale about two people who have everything set against them. Diverse characters and situations are covered, which makes the book that more interesting.
Goodbye, Tsugumi by Banana Yoshimoto
“No matter where you are, you’re always a bit on your own, always an outsider.”
This short novel is great if you don’t have a lot of time to read. It’s about the life of Maria, who’s grown up on the seaside with her sick cousin Tsugumi, then starts a new life in Tokyo. Her life revolves mostly around others, especially because she’s surrounded with such strong characters.
So grab some tea, a cozy sweater, and cuddle up to these great reads!
