Following their season opening win against CTK, the Titan boys looked to make it 2-0 on the season with Monday’s matchup against the White Oaks Wildcats. Playing in their first game at home in River Oaks Arena, with a crowd excited to see some competitive hockey, Trinity took to the ice ready to do whatever it takes to win.
Game 2: White Oaks Wildcats (0-1-0, 5th in Richardson Division) vs. Holy Trinity Titans (1-0-0, 3rd in Richardson Division)
HT came flying out the gates from the opening draw, pressuring the Wildcats early and hard, with speed and skill evident in Coach Consoli’s line up from the get go. Trinity had plenty of offensive zone time early on, with various opportunities. Reed Watson was the starter for Holy Trinity in net, and looked comfortable making saves when he needed to in the 1st, as little amount of shots as they were. Brandon D’Andreis showed off a nice move but failed to convert, sending a shot wide, and a Marley Angus shot rang the post, leaving the game remained tied with close to 5 minutes left in the 1st. The continuous offensive zone time eventually paid off for Trinity, as Justin Lyttle broke the scoreless tie off of a nice passing play. Shortly after, Michael Sputore extended the lead for the Titans boys, and Kolwich also added a tally, giving Trinity a 3-0 lead by the end of the 1st.
Early on in the second, the Titan boys’ control of the game was obvious, and White Oaks dug a bigger hole by taking a penalty, sending Trinity to its first power play of the night. Chris Bassett quickly converted off a D’Andreis rebound, giving them a goal on the man advantage. Moro also scored shortly after, deflecting in a point shot from Eric Hansen. With a 5-0 lead, the boys kept pushing the pace, showing excellent skill in all zones, but WOSS wouldn’t be denied as Wildcat Julian Chiovitti broke the shutout bid for Watson on a breakaway late in the period. However, with about 15 seconds remaining in the period, Bassett dangled his way past the WOSS defenders and potted a beauty, keeping Trinity in control with the score 6-1 all the way until the end of the frame.
Another penalty early in the 3rd period sent Trinity back on the powerplay, but WOSS seemed to have woken up between the periods and had a few short handed chances, catching the Titans by surprise. Cam Stone showed impressive skating ability as he backchecked hard to negate one of these shorthanded breaks. Watson had to be on point during this period and kept WOSS off of the scoreboard with a big glove save on a cross-crease pass midway through the third. Bassett remained the story of the night, as he scored his 3rd goal of the afternoon, completing his hat-trick off his own rebound and giving Trinity an even larger lead. The Titans remained in control for the remainder of the game, with Montague and Sputore putting the icing on the cake with two more goals to end the game, and giving Holy Trinity their second straight win to begin the 2015/16 season.
Final Score: White Oaks 2, Holy Trinity 9.
Post-Game
The atmosphere was electric following the enormous win by Trinity, with a lot of credit due for Bassett. “I think the boys had fun today with the big crowd, especially with the huge hatty from Chris ‘Beans’ Bassett,” said Eric Hansen.
On the team’s chemistry, D’Andreis expressed his thoughts: “The boys are really starting to come together. I think our tournament last week was a great bonding experience and now we're seeing the results.”
