This past Saturday, Team 3161-Tronic Titans, HT’s very own FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) robotics team competed at one of the world’s finest regionals, which were the Waterloo Regionals at University of Waterloo.

Team 3161 is apart of the FRC (FIRST Robotics Competition) program from the organization of FIRST. It is the highest and most intense level of robotics building. Each team receives a six week period to build a robot based on the year’s chosen theme.

The theme chosen this year is FIRST Stronghold, which is a medieval theme based on a game. There are three ways to score: one can breach the outer defenses of each alliance; one can score the high or low goal at both autonomous and driver operation periods; lastly one can capture or climb each tower once it has been weakened by 8 scoring boulders.

After 65 qualification matches, 8 alliances (equivalent of 24 teams) proceeded to the quarterfinals. Unfortunately, Team 3161 was neither the alliance captain nor picked by any of them. Thus, Tronic Titans wrapped up their competitive season with a 3-7 match record.

Outside of the competition, Team 3161 is heavily involved within the school community. The team is being featured on HT’s newspaper, The Titan Times, they are teamed up with the Social Justice League for the Toys and Toonie Campaign which occurred during the holiday season last year and they have hosted more than half of our community’s outside events in the faculty of HT!

The next main event coming up for Team 3161 is our very own Women in STEM Night which is taking place right here at HT on Thursday, May 5, 2016! The team extends greetings to Grade 8-11 girls from the local area to gather and raise awareness for women in engineering. Anyone can sign up for this event by accessing the link below:

A shout out goes out to the school for all of the support they have given to the team. The team would not have been here without the effort the school community has given to the team.

Team 3161 stills meets twice weekly on Monday and Thursday after school in Room 311! Everyone is welcome!
