Holy Trinity on the World Stage

Last week, four students from Holy Trinity participated in the Southern Ontario Model United Nations (SOMA) conference at the University of Toronto. With supervision from religion teacher Mr. Szczesniak, James Condon (11), Hanna Méthot (11), D’Arcy Murphy (12), and Rebecca Vukojevic (12) were in Toronto on April 14th and 15th to participate as delegates in the prestigious conference. Joining delegates from across the continent, they discussed and debated topics while representing countries from around the world.

SOMA, in its 44th iteration this year, is one of the largest Model United Nations conferences in North America and brings together high school students to explore solutions to the planet’s most pressing issues. HT delegates represented committees such as the General Assembly, Economic and Social Council, and World Health Organization. Méthot, Murphy, and Vukojevic all represented the country of Argentina in their respective committees. James Condon participated in a Historical Crisis Committee attempting to rewrite history and solve the crisis of the Second Punic War.

The students were well prepared for debate after participating in the 2nd Annual Halton MUN Conference earlier in April. Madison McNevitts (12), also a member of HT’s MUN team, won Most Honourable Delegate while representing Eritrea on April 1st.

Condon and Méthot will look to represent Holy Trinity again next year and will lead the team after their colleagues in Grade 12 graduate this year.
